Slavery: Underground Railroad

Levi Coffin writes of his experiences as a stationmaster and conductor of the underground railroad in Indiana, and later in Cincinnati, Ohio

Mitchell was a writer, minister and abolitionist active in the Underground Railroad.

William Still was secretary of the Philadelphia Vigilance Committee, which provided assistance to hundreds of fugitives as they made their way through the city. This book is a compilation of the records he kept of those individuals.

Originally published in 1898, this was the first scholarly study of the UGRR. Siebert collected interviews from many who had participated just as the UGRR was passing from living memory. Despite its flaws, (it gives the impression mostly whites were involved, and the UGRR was highly organized everywhere) it is still worth reading.

Originally published in 1883, this started out as a newspaper article and grow into a book. Smedley concentrates on UGRR activities in Pennsylvania. It has the same flaws as Siebert's book.
