SciFinder Scholar is a tool that allows students and faculty access to a wide array of research from many scientific disciplines, chiefly chemistry, medicine, engineering, and material science. It covers 9,500 currently published journals and patents from more than 50 active issuing authorities. Timespan covered is mid-19th century to the present.
There are three searching catagories in SciFinder. In references one can do a research topic (keyword) search, or an author search, or search for company name, or document identfier. Patent searches require a patent number or assignee name or inventer name. Under substances, one can draw a chemical structure with the drawing pad to search. Markush searches enable one to find pieces of structures in patents. Molecular formula searches require entering the formula (H2O). Property searches involve looking for substances by density or boiling point to name a few options. The substance indentifer finds substances by name or number. Under reactions one can draw a reaction structure on the drawing pad and search.
In SciFinder:
1) Select citations by clicking the box to the left of each result.
2) Click on Export. (Located in the upper right corner.)
3) Select "Tagged Format (*.txt) under the Citation Manager section.
4) Edit the file name to something you will remember.
5) Click Export at the bottom of the box.
Go to Refworks:
1) Choose References--Import in the top menu
2) In the pop-up window select CAS SciFinder from the Import Filter/ Data Source.
3) Select Multiple Databases from the Database menu.
4) At the Import Data from the following Text File box click Browse and select your saved file.
5) Click Import
